Hyundai Mobis said Wednesday it will develop an embedded in-vehicle communication module capable of fifth-generation (5G) wireless connectivity, aiming to upgrade connected-car services and support the industry’s shift toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Telematics refers to technology that integrates information and communications systems into vehicles to enable services such as route guidance, accident and theft detection, and remote control. Most telematics systems worldwide currently operate on fourth-generation (4G) networks.

Hyundai Mobis said it plans to complete development of a 5G-based telematics solution by the first half of this year. The upgrade is expected to enhance connected-car services, including high-precision mapping, remote control for autonomous driving and ultra-high-definition streaming.

Under the existing 4G framework, services have largely been limited to over-the-air (OTA) software updates and basic vehicle-to-home connectivity. By advancing its telematics capabilities, Hyundai Mobis aims to strengthen its competitiveness in global order bids. The company is also collaborating with a domestic mobile modem specialist as part of the effort.
