A second comprehensive special counsel bill has cleared the Cabinet, launching a new probe into 17 unresolved allegations from the three previous special counsel probes.

The investigation will run for up to 170 days.

A second comprehensive special counsel bill aimed at investigating allegations that were not addressed by the three previous special counsel probes has been approved at a Cabinet meeting four days after passing the National Assembly.

The goal is to investigate 17 allegations, including Noh Sang-won's notebook and former President Yoon Suk Yeol's treason and military rebellion charges.

The maximum investigation period is 170 days.

As many as 251 investigators will be deployed.

This means the probe will likely continue through the June 3 local elections.

When the special counsel probe into the insurrection ends, covering it up and moving on would be difficult.

Another probe team will be needed.

A Cheong Wa Dae official said although the bill on the second special counsel probe was not led by the president, it was accepted out of respect for parliament's decision.

The ruling Democratic Party reiterated the necessity of another special counsel probe.

The Democratic Party and the Rebuilding Korea Party, which has the most seats among the non-negotiating parties, will each recommend one candidate for special counsel.

Then the president will make the final appointment.
