EU-Mercosur free trade agreement

The commercial agreement between the EU and Mercosur faces significant hurdles despite a qualified majority of EU states’ official approval on 09 January 2026. The EU farming sector opposes the trade deal, denouncing its unbalanced nature. Greenpeace and other environmental organisations also argue that the deal will exacerbate deforestation in the Amazon, as well as increase emissions from long-distance trade.
