[News Today] Police summon Coupang CEO amid probe

Police have been investigating a series of allegations surrounding Coupang's massive data breach.

KBS has confirmed that Coupang CEO Harold Rogers was recently notified by the police to appear for questioning.

Authorities are investigating allegations that log records were deleted, along with possible additional security lapses.

The alleged deletion of log records was revealed at a hearing on Coupang's data leak held late last year.

The Ministry of Science and ICT ordered Coupang to preserve the records immediately after the company reported the personal information leak on November 19th of last year.

But it turns out Coupang deleted parts of the log records about a week later on November 27th.

We confirmed homepage access records for a five-month period have been deleted.
This is in violation of the law.

KBS has confirmed that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Coupang task force recently served summons notice to the company's CEO Harold Rogers.

The science ministry asked the police to conduct an investigation and the police called the ministry's investigative employee to obtain a testimony about Coupang's law violations.

And then the current Coupang CEO was called for questioning.

The investigation is ongoing. We're working daily around the clock with multiple regulators here in Korea as we learn and confirm the facts.

Records were deleted for a five-month period from July to November of 2024.

The deleted records were from about a year prior to last year's massive leak of personal data.

Police are likely to focus their investigation on other possible breaches during this time period.

Police plan to question CEO Rogers on possible vulnerabilities in the company's internal security system at the time of the data leak and on Coupang's internal investigation, which had sparked a self-exoneration controversy.
