Joint Polish-German icebreaking operations on the Odra River near Szczecin
epa12636253 Icebreaking activity on the Odra River near Szczecin, northwest Poland, 08 January 2026, as part of a joint Polish-German operation. Increasingly thick ice cover and a predicted drop in temperature have accelerated the decision to impose a navigation ban on the lower and border sections of the river. Icebreakers are currently operating between Szczecin and Gryfino. The primary icebreaking operation will begin during the thaw, which is forecast to start in about 10 days.
