[LEAD]
The K-pop scene is heating up in the new year. Second-and third-generation idol groups are lining up for comebacks, bringing familiar names into the spotlight. Here's more.

[REPORT]
The first major K-pop stars to make a comeback in the first half of this year is boy band EXO.

The group's management agency said EXO would release their eighth regular album on January 19th and resume team activities after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus.

However, the new album will feature only six members as some members didn't participate in the album production due to legal disputes with their agency.

Global and local media outlets are busy covering news related to BTS' new album this spring and an extensive world tour.

Also, BIGBANG led by G-Dragon is set to make a comeback.

Having debuted in 2006, BIGBANG has something special planned to celebrate their 20th debut anniversary.

Their return performance will likely take place at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival slated for this April in the U.S.

Other returning artists include girl group BLACKPINK with their new regular album, and boy band Wanna One led by Kang Daniel who has a huge fan base.

The return of these globally loved K-pop idol groups will likely have a huge impact on the K-pop landscape.
