[News Today] POSCO E&C raided over fatal collapse
[LEAD]
Authorities have launched a raid on the headquarters of POSCO E&C and related offices following a fatal construction site accident in Seoul.
Five fatal accidents have already occurred involving the firm this year.
[REPORT]
The construction site of the Sinansan subway line in Seoul's Yeouido.
On December 18, a worker in his 50s died after rebars collapsed at a site 70 meters underground.
The prosecution, police, and labor ministry raided offices of the builder POSCO E&C and its subcontractors.
The search and seizure is carried out to look into whether POSCO E&C enforced safety measures to prevent the risk of a collapse and conducted proper oversight and management.
Two accidents have occurred at the Sinansan Line construction site this year alone.
In Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi-do Province, back in April, a worker was killed in another collapse incident at a POSCO E&C site.
With mishaps continuing, even Lee Jae Myung slammed the firm back in July.
Lee Jae Myung / President (July)
In legal terms, isn't this death by willful negligence? It's the result of simply treating deaths as inevitable.
The company replaced its president a week later and promoted safety-first management, but accidents did not stop.
Song Chi-young / CEO, POSCO E&C (Dec. 18)
As the chief executive, I extend deep apologies with a heavy heart.
The number of deaths at POSCO E&C construction sites totals five this year.
