Renowned Korean conductor Chung Myung-whun has been appointed the new music director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra.

He will lead the ensemble starting next January as it marks its 70th anniversary.

The KBS Symphony Orchestra has appointed renowned Korean conductor Chung Myung-whun as its tenth music director.

The orchestra announced that Chung will serve a three-year term from next January, when the orchestra will be marking its 70th anniversary, through December 2028.

Chung has had a long-lasting relationship with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, previously serving as its 5th principal conductor in 1998.

In 2021, he received the honorary title of conductor laureate.

A music director is tasked with determining the orchestra's artistic direction, such as the selection of repertoire and featured performers, as well as mid- to long-term strategies.

In the first year of his term, the newly appointed music director will conduct five performances, including a concert marking the orchestra's 70th anniversary.

He plans to perfect the KBS Symphony Orchestra's musical performances through a repertoire strategy that blends symphonic music and opera.
