[News Today] Rare footage shows early Incheon Port

Rare footage showing Incheon Port 117 years ago has been discovered in France.

The video captures everyday life in Incheon, from dock workers hauling rice sacks and timber, to street vendors going about their day.

A two-way six-lane road leading to Incheon train station.

Built along the road is a church and tower commemorating the arrival of early missionaries in Korea such as Allen, Appenzeller and Underwood.

Going back in time, 117 years ago, this area was a waterfront dock leading to Jemulpo Port.

Numerous sailboats were anchored here.

Nearby roads bustled with people loading and unloading merchandise on and off the boats.

It can be used as the most vivid footage of Incheon between 1905 and 1910, just before Japanese colonization.

Workers load bags of rice onto vessels while lumber is unloaded.

This rare footage was filmed by a French person around February or March of 1908.

The Korean Film Archive discovered the footage among old records kept at the Cinémathèque française in France, and managed to restore it.

It remained intact in a warehouse untouched for over 100 years.
It's like an undisturbed ancient tomb.

The video shows how modern-era architecture remaining to this day looked in the early days, such as a grain storehouse and a Japanese bank.
