In Ireland, one of Europe‘s major data center hubs, Korean companies are validating their data center technologies on-site to explore the potential for European-compliant eco-friendly AI infrastructure. The Irish government has recently strengthened policies requiring data center permits to demonstrate renewable energy integration and the deployment of high-efficiency, energy-saving technologies. This regulatory shift is driving a reassessment of conventional large-scale cooling methods and facility construction approaches. Korean companies are seizing this transition as a strategic opportunity to accelerate their European market entry.

Lumcloon Energy, an Irish renewable energy and data center developer, is currently advancing plans for a 250MW data center complex. The company is actively considering adopting Korean MDC technology for 50MW of this development. As the first phase, Lumcloon Energy and Korean partners are preparing a 1MW PoC. The PoC results will determine whether to proceed with full-scale MDC deployment across the data center complex.

The following Korean companies are participating in this PoC project, each bringing their specialized expertise to deliver an eco-friendly data center solution in containerized modular data center (MDC) infrastructure. Lumcloon Energy Korea leads the initiative, overseeing energy and data center development while integrating Korean solutions. iA cloud Inc. provides the MDC operating platform, including server virtualization, through its AX cloud solution. The consortium also includes Databean Co., Ltd., which brings Korea‘s most advanced immersion cooling technology, and Carbonsaurus Co., Ltd., which delivers real-time monitoring solutions for energy consumption and carbon emissions tracking.

Following the 1MW PoC, the consortium plans to propose an eco-friendly data center + Intelligent Energy Management System (IEMS) model to the European market, integrating Ireland‘s renewable energy infrastructure, distributed energy resources, waste heat recovery systems, and Korean MDC technology.

To advance this vision, AIOps-based autonomous operations specialist IDB Inc., and ESS/Virtual Power Plant (VPP) solution provider Synergy, Inc., iA cloud Inc., Databean Co., Ltd., and Carbonsaurus Co., Ltd. visited Ireland in mid-November to deepen collaboration with Lumcloon Energy and key academic and industry partners.

All participants signed a new MOU to launch full-scale joint research on eco-friendly data centers and IEMS—laying the groundwork for long-term strategic collaboration beyond the PoC phase. During meetings with Enterprise Ireland, the government agency expressed strong support for the consortium‘s participation in EU research programs and expanded field validation in Ireland. The consortium is currently preparing a joint proposal for a Horizon Europe Innovation Action call closing in February 2026.

Surging AI computing demand has elevated data center power consumption and carbon emissions to a critical global challenge. Korean companies have built substantial expertise in next-generation data center core technologies—including immersion cooling, cloud virtualization, and energy optimization. The Ireland project marks the first major European field validation of these capabilities, with significant implications for commercial viability.

The project is supported through the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA)‘s 2025 overseas expansion program for data center equipment and software. Concurrently, the consortium is in active discussions with Enterprise Ireland on project roadmap and potential participation in EU research programs.

As EU energy policies strengthen and carbon regulations tighten, this validation project serves as a critical testbed for a new data center model that satisfies both performance and sustainability requirements. By Kim Daekey
