[News Today] New scams target Coupang data leak victims

Since the massive data breach, Coupang has repeatedly insisted there would be no secondary damage.

But reality tells a different story.

Scammers are now exploiting public anxiety surrounding the data breach, targeting consumers with more sophisticated and aggressive fraud schemes.

Police say reports of suspected fraud have already surpassed 200 cases.

This text message citing the Coupang personal data leak claims to be a compensation notice.

It contains precise leaked information such as the user's bank account number, address, and the exact amount of damage.

It also lists a Telegram address where the user can request compensation, but this is all part of an elaborate scam.

It is a new scam method targeting Coupang users whose personal information has been leaked.

Since the Coupang incident, police have received more than 200 reports of suspected phishing cases in just ten days.

In most cases, the perpetrators impersonated Coupang officials and offered compensation.

Others attempt to lure users into calling a voice phishing operation by claiming a new credit card was issued using leaked personal data.

"This is a postal courier. I am calling ahead regarding the delivery of your credit card."

"I did not order any card."

"This is the number for a fraud prevention team. Please call to verify."

Consumers are increasingly worried about additional damage.

This was the first time something like this happened, and it was shocking, especially with the Coupang incident already causing anxiety.

Any message that urges users to click an external link should be treated with suspicion.

Government agencies do not handle reports of personal information leaks through messengers such as Telegram.

Police continued their raid of Coupang headquarters for a fourth consecutive day.
