[News Today] Deceptive ‘goose down’ labels

As winter approaches, demand for goose down jackets is rising. But new testing shows that several products marketed as 'goose down' contain far less goose feather than required. Some fall dramatically below the quality standard.

The company used recycled duck down as filling, but an online platform sold it as goose down, sparking controversy.

One was 200,000 won and another was 400,000 won. I thought the 400,000 won jacket would be filled with goose down, be warmer.

The Korea Consumer Agency inspected 24 goose down jackets sold on the four major online fashion platforms W Concept, Musinsa, Ably, and Zigzag.

Goose down jackets must contain over 80 percent goose feathers, but seven of them fell far below that criteria.

Some items contained only about 6 percent goose feathers, yet their labels still described them as goose down.

Some items were correctly labeled as containing duck down, but they were still sold online as goose down products.

The problem is that consumers have no easy way to check whether the product they bought is actually goose down.

We check feather types one by one under a microscope, so it's hard for consumers to check for themselves. Fashion platforms need to review product details more carefully.

The fashion platforms suspended the sales of the items in question, and vowed to strengthen their oversight of product management.
