Coal production at the last black-coal mine in Czech Republic before its closure

OKD is the only producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic. Currently, coal is extracted solely at OKD's last active site, the CSM Mine. Construction of the mine began on 01 September 1958, following several months of exploration in the mining field. Due to long-term profitability issues, the company has ceased operations at most of its other mines in recent years, and it expects to end mining at CSM in early 2026. Afterward, it plans to carry out technical decommissioning of the mine for approximately three years while also preparing for potential future ventures in coal-blend production and green energy. With the closure of this final mine, hard coal mining in the region will come to an end after more than 200 years. EPA/MARTIN DIVISEK
