[News Today] “Dec. 3 as People's Sovereignty Day”

Today marks one year since the martial law crisis. President Lee Jae Myung delivered a special address to the nation. He thanked the public, saying martial law was lifted through the people's courage and the power of their solidarity. He also said December 3rd will be remembered as the Day of People's Sovereignty.

President Lee Jae Myung delivered a special address to the nation exactly one year after martial law was declared.

He said it was the first time in the 21st century that a coup took place in a democratic nation but also the first in world history that unarmed civilians stopped it peacefully.

Ironically, the December 3rd coup showed the world the Korean people’s strong will of sovereignty and the amazing resilience of Korean democracy.

President Lee thanked the people for showing bold courage and the shining power of solidarity.

He designated December 3rd as the Day of People’s Sovereignty to remember this day.

He also stressed that the Korean people who overcame an unprecedented crisis in democracy in a peaceful way deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

If the people are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for demonstrating the greatness of democracy to the world, it would provide a big turning point for all nations shaken by conflict and division.

Meanwhile, although the President said there needed to be righteous unity, he emphasized that the revolution of light isn’t over yet since the insurrection still needed to be investigated and the participants punished.

The atrocity of those who destroyed constitutional order and even plotted a war for their personal ambitions must be judged.

As for establishing a special court for insurrection, the President said that it is an issue that should be determined by the National Assembly and that legislators would follow the public opinion and serve the people’s will of sovereignty.

On the need for conducting more special counsel investigations, President Lee reiterated that the National Assembly’s decision comes first, adding that there are clearly too many questions still left unanswered.
