[News Today] Van drives into pedestrians killing 3

A van plowed into a group of people near a port on Udo Island in Jeju-do.

Three people were killed and ten others injured.

The crash happened shortly after the vehicle got off a ferry, in an area where tourists and cars often mix.

People disembark from a ship and walk leisurely away from the pier.

Moments later, they disperse in panic as a van accelerating at high speed suddenly drives into the wharf, crashing into a road sign.

The van driven by a 60-something tourist drove toward a passenger terminal of Cheonjin Port on Udo Island in Jeju City at around 2:50 p.m. Monday.

The car suddenly lurched forward, accelerated and hit the wall. It was quite scary. People were screaming and panicking.

The van hit pedestrians and a three-wheeler before crashing into a metal pole of a road sign and coming to a stop.

The front of the van has been damaged beyond recognition, and shards of glass were scattered on the ground.

Two pedestrians in their 60s and 70s as well as a woman in her 60s who was in the van were rushed to a hospital but died.

Ten other people, including another passenger from the van and pedestrians, sustained moderate to serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Sources say the van suddenly accelerated after driving off the ferry.

The accident reportedly resulted in significant damage, occurring in an area typically crowded with vehicles and pedestrians.

Police say the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

The DUI test cleared. We will identify the cause of the accident after analyzing security surveillance.

The police have requested that the National Forensic Service conduct a detailed forensic examination of the van and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
