[News Today] “‘SHINE Initiative’ for Middle East”

President Lee Jae Myung unveiled Korea's new Middle East policy during his visit to Egypt, introducing what he calls the SHINE Initiative.

The initiative encompasses three fields of peace, prosperity and culture.

He stressed that both regions have lived through conflict, and said this makes active engagement in peace-building even more important.

The Cairo University auditorium with some 3-thousand seats was fully packed.

The Middle East and Korean Peninsula will open a future of coexistence grounded on the SHINE Initiative encompassing three fields of peace, prosperity and culture.

President Lee first said he will build peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East based on stability and harmony.

He believes that peace is the most important topic for both countries always exposed to geopolitical security threats.

In response to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi who expressed his solid support for the Korean government's plan to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, President Lee answered that he would lend a hand to overcome the Gaza situation.

President El-Sisi and I agreed that we'll work together in the Gaza Strip restoration program.

President Lee cited innovation as a strategy to achieve prosperity.

He is determined to find a new growth engine by expanding cooperation with the Middle Eastern region even in cutting-edge future industries.

Korea's high-speed compressed growth was a historic achievement that would have been impossible without the help from the Middle East.

Now it's Korea's turn to contribute to the miracle on the Nile.

The South Korean president also vowed to extend the scale of cultural cooperation through networking and education and emphasized that exchanges between young people would be the strongest connecting link.

His "Cairo Plan" is expected to be the starting point of Korea's efforts to expand the country's diplomatic activities in the Middle East and Africa.
