HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. announced on Monday that it has signed a construction contract with the global shipping company Regional Container Line (RCL) for two ultra-large container vessels.

The contract is valued at 435.3 billion won ($298 million). The ships will be built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and delivered sequentially by October 2028.

The newly ordered vessels are 13,800-TEU class. Each vessel is 337 meters long, 51 meters wide, and 27.3 meters high. They will be fitted with a scrubber, an exhaust gas reduction device.

RCL, the world’s 21st-largest container carrier by operating capacity, is expanding its fleet with large, eco-friendly vessels to meet growing demand for energy-efficient maritime transport.

With the latest order, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured contracts for 61 container ships so far this year — more than double last year’s total of 28 — underscoring its strong momentum in the high-value vessel segment.

“We are continuing to secure orders in the container ship sector based on our eco-friendly technological capabilities,” said a company official. “We will actively pursue new markets based on our overwhelming technology and track record in shipbuilding.”
