South Korea is set to develop and launch its third geostationary meteorological satellite, known as Chollian-5, as the 600.8 billion won ($439 million), launch project proved its feasibility in a national budget feasibility study on Thursday, the Ministry of Science and ICT said.

The project focuses on developing a new geostationary meteorological satellite scheduled to be launched in 2031. The new satellite will replace Chollian-2A, the meteorological satellite that is currently in operation, and will be responsible for short-term weather forecasts at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The developers include state-funded organizations, including the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and private companies, and the project will run from 2025 to 2031.
