Modernization of Jeepneys in the Philippines Faces Mixed Reactions

epa11362482 Filipino junk shop operator Danilo Canete strips an iconic Filipino jeepney into scrap in Manila, Philippines, 06 May 2024 (issued 23 May 2024). Danilo Canete, a junk shop operator, has been seeing an uptick in his business since the phase-out began on May 1, with at least three jeepneys brought to his shop daily. He buys old jeepneys for 30,000 Philippine pesos (545 USD) each. Along with two colleagues, they can strip one jeepney into scrap in less than four hours. The engine is dismantled and sold to car parts shops, while the rest is weighed and sold to a metal recycling factory. In June 2017, the Philippine government?s Department of Transportation (DOTr) initiated a Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) aimed at creating a safer, efficient and environmentally sustainable land transport system in the country. Among the measures in the program is the replacement of traditional jeepneys, or local minibuses, with modern versions that cost approximately 1 to 3 million Philippine pesos (16,200 to 48,600 euro).
