Opening of “Udo Rainbow Bridge” brings happiness to residents and tourists

Just opened, the 1.3 km "Rainbow Bridge" in Namyang-myeon, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, links Jungsan-ri and Namyang-ri. The new bridge has removed the annoyance of inhabitants having to use the stepping-stone walkway to get to the mainland twice a day at low tide./Young-geun

Every trip from Jungsan-ri in Namyang-myeon, Goheung-gun, to Udo Island involved waiting.

Walking the stepping-stone route to the island, locals waited silently for the tide to drop. Even though Udo island is just 1.3 kilometers from the mainland, there were no ferry services, so one could only get there when the tide was out. On Udo Island, renowned for its stunning sunsets, reside about 180 people. Something amazing happened to this little island community on Apr. 24. Finally, the island and the mainland were connected by a bridge.

The so-called “Udo Rainbow Bridge,” is the longest pedestrian bridge in South Korea. Its vivid rainbow-colored decorations stand for prosperity and promise. Udo Island’s blue water and the rainbow-colored floor and railings combine to create a stunning spectacle.

People no longer have to wait for the tide to pass. Islanders now enjoy a better quality of life as a result of the quicker emergency response times.

Sunset offers a spectacular vista from the Udo Rainbow Bridge. It should develop into a brand-new Goheung-gun tourist destination.
