Action adventure film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” broke the winning streak of crime action film “The Roundup: Punishment” by topping the Korean box office on the day of its release.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” released on Wednesday, garnered 75,399 moviegoers on its first day, holding the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office the same day, according to the Korea Box Office Information System (Kobis) on Thursday.
The figure was almost two times higher than the Wednesday admissions of “The Round-up: Punishment,” which had 38,240 admissions, the Mad Max franchise distributor Warner Brothers Korea said.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” recorded more than 783 million won ($573,000) in domestic opening sales, surpassing the previous film in the series, “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), which logged 766 million won. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” has stood at No. 1 in ticket sales for five days straight since Saturday, the distributors said.
“The Roundup: Punishment” was recently riding a winning streak, reaching the 10 million ticket milestone last week. The film made “The Roundup” series the most successful film franchise in Korea, as three out of its four films garnered more than 10 million moviegoers.
The recently released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is a spin-off and prequel of the previous film in the series, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and the fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise.
Directed by George Miller, the film features stars including Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth and follows the revenge story of Furiosa, played by Taylor-Joy.
