Convenience store chain GS25 announced on Thursday that it will release a limited edition premium makgeolli called “Seoul Silver Limited Edition” in collaboration with Ryu In-soo, head of the Korea Gayangju Research Institute, starting from May 1st, 2024.

The new makgeolli, which will be produced at a Seoul brewery run by Ryu, is the fourth release of the “Hip Makgeolli Project” and the first premium product to apply the highest-quality Oyangju method.

Oyangju is a meticulous technique that requires five stages of fermentation, making mass production challenging as fermentation alone takes a month to complete. The quantity being released via GS25 in this batch is a mere 9,000 bottles.

Made without any artificial additives, the makgeolli is brewed using Korean rice, Seolhwagok yeast made at the Seoul brewery, and water only. It promises a rich tropical fruit aroma and a smooth texture. Packaged in a 375mL size, the alcohol content is 10 percent, and the price is set in the 9,000 won range.

“With the launch of this product, we have expanded our product portfolio to include premium authentic makgeolli,” GS Retail said. “By introducing various unique makgeolli from reputable breweries nationwide, we aim to solidify our position as a rising force in the makgeolli market.”
