Queen of Belgium attends World Cocoa Conference 2024

epa11293473 United Nations Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals, Queen Mathilde of Belgium (C), talks to a representative of Rainforest Alliance during a visit to the 'Global Village', a real immersion in the world of cocoa, during the 5th World Conference on Cocoa, organised by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO) in Brussels, Belgium, 22 April 2024. Queen Mathilde delivered an opening speech before visiting the 'Global Village', a real immersion in the world of cocoa. Climate change in West Africa, where most of the world's cocoa comes from, causes a global shortage and drives up prices as harvests are expected to fall short for a third year in a row. According to the UN, cocoa bean prices have skyrocketed as the price per ton on the futures market crossed $10,000 for the first time ever on 26 March. Diseases like swollen shoot virus and black pod are also taking a toll on cocoa crops in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. EPA/OLIVIER MATTHYS
