It’s general election season in Korea, and K-pop fans know what that means for idols: No colorful clothes, and keep all hand gestures to a minimum.

몇 년에 한 번씩, 다양한 형태로 돌아오는 선거철엔 한국에서 가수를 지칭하는 K팝 아이돌은 특정 당이나 후보를 지지하는 것처럼 보일 경우 스타에게 비난을 쏟아내는 정치 지지자로부터 원치 않는 비난을 받지 않기 위해 매 걸음 매우 조심스럽게 행동한다.

Idols refrain from wearing clothes with any of the many vivid colors that are used to represent the political parties — red for the People Power Party, blue for the Democratic Party, yellow and green for the Justice Party and so on — and don’t make the usual thumbs up or peace sign with their hands when they pose outside of polling stations, lest the gestures be interpreted as the number of a particular candidate or party.

아이돌은 정당을 대표할 때 사용되는 선명한 색의 옷을 입는 것을 자제한다. 빨간색은 국민의힘, 파란색은 더불어민주당, 노란색과 초록색은 녹색정의당 등등. 투표소 밖에서 사진을 찍을 때 흔히 하는 ‘엄지 척’을 한다던가 손가락으로 브이 모양을 해서 특정 후보나 정당의 숫자로 해석되지 않도록 한다.

And not voting isn’t the answer, because some fans reproach idols for being indifferent to the most sacred duty and right of democracy if they do not explicitly prove that they voted.

그렇다고 선거에 참가하지 않는 것도 답이 아니다. 투표를 하고 확실하게 인증을 하지 않으면 일부 팬은 아이돌이 민주주의의 가장 신성한 의무이자 권리에 무관심하다며 비난하기 때문이다.

K-pop idols are held to high standards by the public, and it’s not just their love lives that they need to censor. Under the piercing scrutiny of the K-pop audience, almost anything can become controversial even if it’s nothing criminal. Sometimes the stars are objectively at fault, sometimes the fans are just overly critical and sometimes it’s a tossup.

K팝 아이돌을 평가할 때 대중의 평가 기준은 높다. 그들이 검열해야 하는 것은 연애 만이 아니다. K팝 청자들의 꿰뚫는 검사 속에선 아무 잘못을 하지 않더라도 거의 모든 것이 논란거리가 된다. 스타들이 객관적으로도 잘못을 했을 때도 있고, 팬들이 지나치게 비판적일 때도 있고, 복불복일 때도 있다.
