epa11284543 Ukrainian and Romanian children play games together during the hour of recreational activity at the newly opened Day Care Center For Ukrainian Refugee Children in Bucharest, Romania, 17 April 2024. Save the Children Romania opened a Day Center for Refugee Children from Ukraine in Bucharest, where the little ones will benefit from homework training, hot meals, Romanian language courses, and recreational activities. The project, supported by UNHCR, the National Children Protection Directorate (DGASPC), and sponsored by Romanian companies and multinational companies operating in Romania, aims to also facilitate the integration of the mothers of these children into the local labor market. Ukrainian and Romanian children benefit from this program together to increase the chances of refugee children's integration. Approximately 40 children between the ages of 6 and 11 will attend the center daily, from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and the Save the Children Romania organization will cover the nursery and kindergarten fees for another 60 children with ages between 2 and 5 years. Three out of five Ukrainian refugee parents in Romania do not have a job, while only 17 percent are employed with a contract in Romania, 11 percent work remotely for a company outside the country, and 7 percent are employed without an employment contract, according to an investigation carried out by Save the Children Romania in February 2024. Since the war started in Ukraine, 21,617 Ukrainian citizens have been registered in Romania as refugees, of whom 14,727 were women. EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
