Roma music concert performed by young inmates and free artists at the Goethe Institut in Bucharest

'Music for listening' style is sung usually by Roma people for Roma people, and includes the themes of harsh life, the historical effects of slavery and poverty, living on the fringes of society, and the subjects of the lyrics mostly concern the lives of those arrested and convicted. Shamanelism is a cultural project to encourage and support the exploration and strengthening of the ethnic cultural identity of the young Roma in the Craiova Detention Center through contemporary Roma music and it takes place over two years, 2023-2024, offering young Roma detainees non-formal technical training and know-how from within the music industry. The Shamanelism project, financed by the EEA Grants 2014-2021 within the RO-CULTURE Program, is being carried out in the detention centers in Craiova and Bucharest, between May 2022 and April 2024, the total amount of non-refundable funding being 198,286.07 euros. The EEA grants represent the contribution of Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway to the reduction of economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area and to the strengthening of bilateral relations with the 15 beneficiary states in Eastern and Southern Europe and the Baltic States.
