Sales ban on oysters from Arcachon Bay issued over food poisoning cases

Authorities have issued a temporary ban on all fishing, harvesting, and selling of shellfish from the Arcachon Basin, due to several cases of food poisoning. The ban comes at an inopportune time for producers, just three days before New Year's Eve. According to the Arcachon Aquitaine Regional Shellfish Farming Committee, they are victims of the saturation of wastewater and rainwater networks, which are causing overflows in the environment and contaminating production areas. Two months ago, storms destroyed several hectares of oyster farms on the Banc d'Arguin, and now professionals are worried that this new ban will cause an unprecedented economic crisis.
