Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “I express my deep gratitude to the judiciary for clearly proving that they are the last bastion of human rights,” after he avoided arrest on September 27.

Following the court’s rejection of his arrest warrant, the Democratic Party leader walked out of the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do at around 4 a.m. Tuesday and made the comment. He also said, “It may seem like politics is determined by politicians, but it is indeed determined by the people.”

Lee further said that the ruling and opposition parties and the government must all remember the fact that politics should always look after the lives of the people and pioneer the future of the nation and expressed his wishes for politics in Korea to stop engaging in a battle to kill and eliminate the opposition and return to the true meaning of politics, competing to see who can properly carry out more roles for the people and the country.

Lee said, “Now, Chuseok, which should be a joyful holiday, is two days away. But the people’s lives, our economy and the people’s livelihoods are in a truly tough state.” He asked the government, the People Power Party (PPP) and all politicians to turn politics into something that gives people hope, that can contribute to the future of the nation.

Lee said, “Once again, I express my deep gratitude to the judiciary for firmly defending the constitutional order in the Republic of Korea and for making a wise decision,” and bowed.
