China's Sinopec prepares to start retail operations in Sri Lanka

The Chinese state-owned petroleum corporation, Sinopec, is set to officially kick off its retail operations in Sri Lanka in mid-September. This will be carried out through its subsidiary, Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. The first fueling station, located in the Mattegoda town suburb of Colombo, commenced operations. Sinopec has obtained a 20-year license to oversee 150 privately owned fuel outlets formerly run by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. Furthermore, the company has outlined plans to set up an additional 50 fuel stations. Sinopec Energy Lanka (Pvt) Ltd has commenced selling diesel and petrol below the maximum retail price set by the state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. EPA/CHAMILA KARUNARATHNE
