Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is participating in Gastech 2022, which takes place from Monday to Thursday this week in Milan, and introduced developments on green technologies, including ammonia fuel and autonomous navigation solutions.

Gastech, the world’s largest event for the gas sector encompassing liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen and low carbon solutions, celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and attracted over 38,000 attendees and 750 exhibitors from about 60 countries. More than 30 executives and employees of HHI is attending Gastech 2022, including HHI president Chung Ki-sun and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) Vice Chairman Ka Sam-hyun.

HHI obtained ten technical certifications and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the first day of Gastech 2022, including an approval in principal (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Marshall Islands Registry for a 74,000-cubic-meter class ship to transport liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2), the largest of its kind.

Additional AiPs were obtained for smaller LCO2 carriers from Lloyd’s Register and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry, while AiPs for ammonia fueled ships were also obtained from the ABS. HHI also signed an MOU with Siemens for developing autonomous navigation technology and environmentally sustainable fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen.

“We plan to lead the way in the paradigm shift towards green and digital transitions and successfully complete the commercialization of these technologies,” said an HHI spokesperson.

HHI also made outreach efforts during Gastech 2022 towards visitors to promote Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030, handing out brochures and installing banners at its booth at the event site.
