In a good year, a cage in an oyster garden would hold many clumps of oysters like these two, shown on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Instead, many of the shells that held up to 10 of the tiny, translucent babies called spat when they were put into the water off the school's dock are now empty and survivors were about the size of finger- or thumbnails. The school is among more than 50 locations in Mississippi and hundreds nationwide -- most of them private docks -- where volunteers are raising oysters to help build reefs off of their states' coasts.
