South Korea’s LG Energy Solution has become the first battery maker in the world to join two environmental initiatives RE100 and EV100, under which it vows to be zero carbon emitter by 2030.

The company announced Thursday that it received the final nod in membership to RE100 and EV100 initiatives.

RE100 is a global collaborative initiative among companies committed to using 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. Currently, 298 firms including Google, Apple and General Motors have joined the campaign.

LG Energy Solution said it will use 100 percent renewable energy at all of its facilities at home and abroad by 2030, becoming the first Korean battery company to join the campaign. Its factories in Poland and the Unites States are already running entirely on renewable energy.

The company has also become the first battery producer in the world to join EV100, a global initiative led by The Climate Group to bring together companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and making EVs the new normal by 2030.

Under the initiative, it will replace 100 percent of its corporate vehicles under 3.5 tonnes with EVs and 50 percent of its cars between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes by 2030.

“Batteries are important products to achieve carbon neutrality,” said LG Energy Solution president Kim Jong-hyun. “LG Energy Solution is a leader in the green energy industry and will set an example in reducing carbon emissions in the process of battery production.”
