이재용 삼성전자 부회장이 설 연휴 브라질을 찾아 TV•가전•스마트폰 생산라인을 점검하고 지역 거점 법인에서 전략회의를 진행하며 중남미 시장 지배력을 더 공고히 하기 위한 전략 수립에 나섰다.

Jay Y. Lee, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and de facto head of Korea’s top conglomerate Samsung Group, chose Brazil for his first overseas tour in 2020 to strengthen presence in the Central and South America.

이 부회장은 2014년부터 추석•설 연휴를 활용해 미국 중국 중동에서 현장경영을 이어가며 삼성이 전략적으로 강화해야 할 사업 부문을 살펴보고 협업•영업 등을 위한 글로벌 네트워킹을 확대해 왔는데, 이번에는 중남미 사업 총괄 거점인 브라질로 향했다. 그는 특히 상무로 승진해 삼성전자 경영에 본격적으로 참여하기 시작한 2001년 첫 해외 출장지로 브라질 마나우스를 선택한 바 있는데, 20여 년 만에 이곳을 다시 찾아 '도전•혁신•개척정신'을 거듭 언급하며 작년부터 강조하고 있는 '성장동력 마련'과 '미래 준비'에 대한 의지도 다졌다.

Lee’s visit to Brazil was part of his annual tradition of inspecting overseas operations during the nation's major holidays to seek for new strategic opportunities and enhance global networking since 2014. Last time he visited the country was 2001 when he first joined the group management as an executive official.

이번 방문은 삼성의 중남미 시장 지배력을 더 공고히 하기 위한 전략 수립 차 이루어졌다.

During his visit, the Korean tech giant would explore ways to cement leadership in South America.

삼성전자는 브라질을 거점으로 중남미 시장에서 압도적 지배력을 보여주고 있다. 스트래티지애널리틱스와 IHS마킷 등에 따르면 작년 3분기 중남미에서 삼성전자 TV•스마트폰 점유율은 각각 41.3%, 42.3%로 1위를 달리고 있다. 2위와 격차는 TV가 16%포인트, 스마트폰이 24.8%포인트다.

Samsung Electronics has maintained comfortable lead in the Central and South American market. It claimed a 41.3 percent share in the local TV market in the quarter ended September last year, with a 42.3 percent share in the smartphone market, according to market research firms Strategic Analytic and IHS Markit. The gap with the runner-ups is 16 percentage points for TVs and 24.8 percentage points for smartphones.

삼성전자에 따르면 이 부회장은 27일(현지시간) 브라질 북부 마나우스 삼성전자 법인을 방문해 생산라인을 점검하고 사업전략을 수립했다. 임직원 약 4200명이 근무 중인 마나우스 공장은 TV•가전•스마트폰 등을 생산하며 중남미 시장 교두보 역할을 하고 있다.

According to Samsung Electronics, Lee visited its Brazilian operation in Manaus on Monday (local time) to monitor the local manufacturing lines for TVs, home appliances and smartphones and held a strategic meeting with employees.

이번 출장에는 TV사업을 총괄하는 한종희 영상디스플레이사업부장(사장)과 스마트폰 사업을 담당하는 노태문 무선사업부장(사장), 장시호 글로벌기술센터장(부사장) 등이 동행해 이 부회장의 전략수립을 도왔다.

He was accompanied by Han Jong-hee, head of the visual display unit, Roh Tae-moon, head of the mobile business, and Chang Si-ho, head of the global technology center, the company said.

이 부회장은 현지 직원을 격려하는 자리에서 "위기를 기회로 바꾸는 힘은 끊임없는 도전과 혁신에서 나온다"며 "과감하게 도전하는 개척자 정신으로 100년 삼성의 역사를 함께 써나가자"고 당부했다.

“Like a bold risk taker and pioneer, let’s make another hundred years of Samsung’s history,” Lee said at an event to encourage employees while emphasizing relentless efforts to seek challenges and innovations at a time of crisis.

삼성전자는 1995년 브라질에서 유일한 자유무역지대인 마나우스에 법인을 설립하고 이곳을 중남미 생산 거점으로 활용해왔다. 삼성전자는 이 부회장이 방문하는 세 곳 외에도 상파울루에 브라질 연구소와 중남미 디자인 연구소 등을 두고 지역 특화제품을 개발하고 있다.

With a manufacturing base founded in 1995 in Manaus, Samsung Electronics operates many other research centers and design centers for regional-exclusive models in Brazil.

재계에서는 이 부회장이 20여 년 만에 마나우스 법인을 다시 찾아 '도전•혁신•개척'을 강조한 것은 반도체•디스플레이에 이어 TV와 스마트폰 등 세트 부문에서도 미래 준비와 성장동력 마련에 박차를 가하기 위한 것이라는 해석이 나온다.

Industry insiders say Lee’s latest visit to Brazil is to spur the next growth of its TV set and smartphone set divisions, together with the chip and display businesses.

이 부회장은 28일에는 중남미 거점인 상파울루 법인을 찾아 전략회의를 진행하고 스마트폰 생산 거점인 캄피나스 공장도 방문할 계획이다.

Lee will tour other operations in Sao Paulo and Campinas.

이 부회장은 2014년부터 설•추석 활용해 해외 현장 방문, 현지 사업 점검•전략수립, 글로벌 리더들과 네트워킹 강화 등을 이어가고 있다. 작년 설 연휴에는 중국 시안 메모리 반도체 공장 공사 현장을 점검했고, 지난해 추석 연휴에는 사우디아라비아 수도 리야드에서 삼성물산 지하철 공사 현장을 방문한 후 무함마드 빈살만 왕세자를 만나기도 했다. 2016년 추석에는 인도에서 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리를 접견했다.

Lee has spent his holidays in visiting overseas operations to monitor the local business and strengthen global networking since 2014. Last year, he visited the construction site for its memory chip production line in Xian, China in the Lunar New Year holidays and met with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia to discuss partnership in city projects in the Middle Eastern country during the Chuseok, or mid-autumn festival, holiday. He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Chuseok in 2016.

삼성은 미국 및 중국 시장에서 존재감이 약해지는 가운데 인도와 중남미, 중동 등 신흥시장에서 탈출구를 찾고 있다.

Samsung has been seeking to enhance its footing in emerging markets such as India, Latin America and the Middle East to make up for waning presence in the U.S. and China.
