Beekeeping in Czech prison

Hermanice is one of several prisons in Bohemia that are taking part in the Prison Beekeeping Program, an initiative of the Czech Ministry of Justice and the Prison Service. The prison is currently filled at 128 percent of its capacity, housing 867 prisoners instead of the intended number of 711. The inmates are incarcerated on offences ranging from driving offences to much more serious crimes like murder. The first bees have been introduced to Hermanice in April 2017. Not every inmate can take part in the beekeeping program. It is not possible for too many people to move around the hives, so the number of participants is limited. Three prisoners are ideal. Nowadays six inmates work in the program, two of them from the beginning. Beekeeping does not reduce the prisoners? sentences but it can affect their assessment. Prisoners can receive disciplinary remuneration for their activities, which affects their conditional release. The honey produced at Hermanice cannot be sold as the prison is not allowed to engage in sales activities. Instead the honey is donated as a gift to other organizations, and prisoners can give some of their product to relatives. The honey is called 'Brucoun' (lit.: The Grouch). It is slang referring to being 'in the clink'. The name was selected in a local newspaper survey. The logo was designed by the prisoners themselves. Last year the prisoners harvested 250kg of honey. This year they expect a harvest of only 100kg because of bad weather conditions. Hermanice Prison is in a good place for beekeeping as there are a lot of lime, maple and willow trees.
