Kumho Petrochemical may mull joining bid for Asiana Airlines if it gets the offer: CEO(박삼구 동생 박찬구 "아시아나 인수후보와 손잡을 수 있다")

아시아나항공 인수전의 막이 오른 가운데 이 회사의 2대 주주인 금호석유화학(11.98%)의 박찬구 회장이 가족 내 지분 유지 차원에서 유력 인수 후보들과 손을 잡을 수 있다는 입장을 내놨다,

A member of Kumho Asiana Group’s owner family indicated he could help sustain some family interest in Asiana Airlines Inc. through Kumho Petrochemical Co., the second-largest shareholder of the carrier whose stake is up for sale.

16일 박찬구 회장은 매일경제신문과의 인터뷰에서 아시아나항공 인수 후보들 중 한 곳이 전략적 차원에서 함께 손을 잡자는 제안이 올 경우에 대한 질문에 "요청이 들어온다면 검토하겠다"고 밝혔다.

Park Chan-koo, chief executive of Kumho Petrochemical and the estranged brother of Kumho Asiana Group Chairman Park Sam-koo, said in an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper Tuesday that he could consider the option if a bidder invites his company to join the tender.

금호석유화학은 아시아나항공의 지분 11.98%를 소유하고 있는 2대 주주다. 최대주주인 금호산업은 최근 그룹 자구안의 일환으로 아시아나항공 지분 33.5%을 매각하는 대신 채권단의 자금 지원을 받기로 약속했다.

Kumho Petrochemical holds an 11.98 percent stake in the country's second-largest airline, second only to Kumho Industrial Co., whose 33.5 percent stake will be handed over to creditors for sale as part of a self-rescue plan to keep the indebted conglomerate afloat.

다만 박 회장은 "이번 아시아나항공 인수전에 주도적으로 참여하거나 추가 지분 확보에 나서는 방안은 전혀 검토하고 있지 않다"고 밝혔다. 어디까지나 보유 지분 가치 극대화 측면에서 고려한다는 의미로 경영참여 차원은 아니라는 설명이다.

Kumho Petrochemical, if it does take part, will only do so to protect the value of its existing interests in Asiana Airlines, its CEO said. “We have no intentions to join the race as an individual bidder or take up additional shares,” Park stressed.

박 회장은 지난 2006년과 2008년 금호아시아나그룹이 대우건설과 대한통운을 인수하는 과정에서 형인 박삼구 전 금호아시아나그룹 회장과 '형제의 난'을 치룬 적이 있다.

Park Chan-koo’s relationship with his older brother became strained after a bitter family feud involving the acquisition of Daewoo Engineering & Construction in 2006 and Daehan Tongwoon, now CJ Logistics, in 2008.

창업주 3남인 박삼구 전 회장이 신성장 동력 확보 및 그룹 몸집을 불리는 차원에서 대우건설과 대한통운 인수를 연이어 추진하자 4남인 박찬구 금호석유화학 회장이 반대하면서 갈등이 시작됐다. 20008년 금융위기로 금호아시아나그룹이 유동성 위기에 몰리자 박찬구 회장은 금호산업 지분을 전량 매각하고 금호석유화학 지분을 대폭 늘리며 계열 분리를 추진했다. 박삼구 전 회장은 2009년 동생을 대표 자리에서 해임하고, 자신도 명예회장으로 퇴진했다.

The rift began as Park voiced his opposition to the two deals, which Park Sam-koo pushed forward as means of seeking new growth to bulk up the conglomerate. The group eventually faced a liquidity crisis following the global financial crisis, and Park Chan-koo sold his entire stake in Kumho Industrial to boost his holdings in Kumho Petrochemical in an attempt to go separate ways. This led Park Sam-koo to kick his younger brother from his post as chairman of Kumho Petrochemical, while he himself stepped down to become the group’s honorary chairman.
