Hyundai Motor has participated in Perceptive Automata’s Series A funding to back the U.S. artificial intelligence startup’s behavioral science approach to develop AI that understands humans’ states of mind to solve major challenges in autonomous driving, robot and smart city applications.

The Korean carmaker did not disclose the value of its investment.

Perceptive Automata, founded in 2014, is a leading developer of psychophysics-derived pedestrian awareness and intent solutions for autonomous vehicles.

The company’s software gives automated vehicles the ability to understand the state-of-mind of humans including pedestrians and other motorists. This capability is required for automated vehicles to drive safely in a human-dominated road environment.

Sid Misra, co-founder and CEO of Perceptive Automata, and its chief technology officer Sam Anthony, are regarded as pioneers of this technology.

Hyundai Motor said it will be able to advance the safety of autonomous vehicles by combining Perceptive Automata’s AI technology and an array of self-driving solutions.
