Kolon Industries, a chemical and fashion unit of Korea’s Kolon Group, said it was awarded the Display Component of the Year Award for its curved and foldable colorless polyimide (CPI) film at the 2018 Display Industry Awards presented by the Society for Information Display (SID) during the Display Week 2018 held in Los Angeles last week.

The SID’s Display Week is the premier international event for the electronic display industry.

Kolon succeeded in commercializing the world’s first fully transparent colorless polyimide, a key component that enables the application and advancement of flexible displays.

Conventional polyimide films are yellow in color, limiting their use for general-purpose displays. Kolon's CPI is the first available wide-roll film to accommodate flexible, foldable, and rollable devices, creating a wide range of new possibilities, the company said in a statement.

The product built with a patented, high heat resistant, optically and mechanically superior material offers superior folding properties and roll-to-roll processing capabilities. It can replace hard glass for cover windows, glass components in display devices or substrates for touchscreens and thin-film transistors used in flat-panel displays.

Kolon Industries is among a select few that can mass-produce colorless polyimide films.

The company completed a plant to mass produce its CPI films late last year. The new plant is capable of manufacturing about 30 million units a year for 5.5-inch smartphones. The company plans to expand the production lines depending on future market conditions.
