Visually impaired Filipino student integrated into elementary school

Maria Sofia Brianna Cuna, nine-year-old, has been diagnosed with cystic craniopharyngioma when she was two years old. The brain tumor caused her to lose her eye sight. Not being able to afford the expensive operation, her parents Liclyn and Jude Cuna were encouraged to seek out alternative three-month treatment without surgery. The treatment proved successful to reduce the swelling and the tumors were gone but her vision did not come back. At six-years old, Brianna was enrolled in a kindergarten Special Education (SPED) class at the Commonwealth Elementary School, a public school providing free education to underprivileged children in Quezon City. Along with other visually impaired children, she learned the Braille system in order to read and write. By the end of the schoolyear, she was deemed ready to be integrated into a grade one class of students with normal vision. For three years, Brianna has been attending regular elementary classes with occasional assistance from her mother or an SPED staff to help her take notes.
