힘들게 알아냈죠!

Andi : Jieun, have you ever made a pronunciation mistake while speaking English?

Andi : 지은씨는 영어로 말하면서 발음 실수한 적 있어요?

Jieun: Sure! All the time, actually. Why do you ask?

Jieun: 그럼요! 사실 항상 그래요. 왜요?

Andi : Well, I have a friend who found out that pronunciation is very important while speaking Korean.

Andi: 음, 한국말을 할 때 발음이 얼마나 중요한지를 깨달은 친구가 한 명 있거든요.

Jieun: What happened?

Jieun: 무슨 일이 있었는데요?

Andi : My friend has been here for 3 weeks and he doesn’t speak Korean. Last Friday he got into a taxi and told the driver to take him to Shin-chon.

Andi: 제 친구가 한국에 3주 동안 있었는데 한국말을 할 줄 모르거든요. 지난 주

금요일에 그 친구가 택시를 타고 운전기사에게 ‘신촌’에 가 달라고

말했나봐요.

Jieun: You mean Shin-chon near Hong-dae, right?

Jieun: 홍대 근처 신촌 말씀 하시는 거죠?

Andi: Exactly! But my poor friend pronounced it Shin-chun. You know, on the east side of Seoul.

Andi: 맞아요! 근데 제 불쌍한 친구는 ‘신촌’을 ‘신천’이라고 한 거에요. 신천은

서울 동쪽에 있잖아요.

Jieun: Oh my gosh, so how did he find out that he was in the wrong place?

Jieun: 어머, 그래서 자기가 길을 잘못 찾아간 걸 어떻게 알게 됐대요?

Andi: He found out the hard way! When he looked at his subway map he realized that there are two Shin-chon’s but they are pronounced differently.

Andi: 힘들게 알아냈죠! 지하철 지도를 보니까 ‘Shin-Chon’ 역이 2개 있는데

2개가 발음이 다르게 난다는 걸 알게 됐대요.
