South Korea’s state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) Co. signed a $25.6 million contract with Bhutan’s electricity authority for intelligence substation, it said Sunday.

KEPCO on Saturday (local time) clinched the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)-based contract with the Bhutan Power Corporation (BPC) to build intelligence substation in southern area of Bhutan. Under the EPC contract, KEPCO will be solely responsible for integrated engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The new intelligence substation will accommodate digitally-controlled oversight system.

KEPCO will replace the existing outdated substation in southern area of Bhutan with the compact indoor power substation. The substation is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Materials and equipment for the construction will be supplied by Korean manufacturers and KEPCO expects the project to record exports worth 14 billion won ($11 million).

The state-run electricity company has executed a total $170 million of projects to build power grids in 23 nations including Kazakhstan and India since 2001. It has about $40 million worth of power transmission projects underway in 13 nations such as Pakistan, Nigeria and Cambodia.

CEO Cho Hwan-eik noted that the contract marks a milestone for KEPCO, enabling it to export its compact substation to developing nations for the first time in its history. It also lays the foundation for small and mid-sized companies to explore overseas business opportunities, he said.
