Samsung Elec. partners with Verizon on smart TV contents in US

South Korea's Samsung Electronics, the world's top TV maker, has decided to cooperate with US-based Verizon, North America's leading telecommunications company, on smart TV contents.

Earlier, Samsung Electronics also teamed up with Australia-based Telstra, Estonia's Elion and Uruguay's Antel to establish and expand ecosystem in contents for smart TVs. Through the partnership with the world's leading telecommunications companies, it also targets to keep its US-based rival Apple in check, as Apple, which has been manufacturing consumer IT products, is preparing to launch TVs.

Samsung Electronics reported Tuesday that it will cooperate with Verizon, which has 120 million subscribers, on TV contents. Through the cooperation, Samsung smart TV users in the US will be able to watch IPTV without set top boxes.

Samsung will be providing IPTV services including live television and VOD (video-on-demand) contents via Verizon's FiOS TV app in the US. As long as one has a Samsung smart TV and Verizon's Internet service, he can enjoy IPTV contents by simply completing user registration on the app.

IPTV subscribers can watch 26 famous cable channels including CNN, MTV, and HBO real time, using Verizon FiOS app. Samsung aims to offer 130 HD channels and all channels offered by Verizon real time by 2013.

Samsung has secured approximately 16,000 VOD contents offered by Verizon for now, and plans to increase the number to over 30,000 by the third quarter (Q3) this year.
