Gov't sets aside $1.44 bn for biomedical research this year

The South Korean government announced Sunday that it will be investing 1.68 trillion won ($1.44 billion) in biomedical engineering research, 95.9 billion won in stem cell research, and 75.9 billion won in brain sciences this year.
These funds will be used to boost Korea's biotech expertise and competitiveness, to lay the basic groundwork for further development, and to improve the practical application of exceptional research.
In the field of biomedical engineering, six government departments and institutions will be funneling in a combined amount of 1.68 trillion won - 1.43 trillion won for research and development, 197.3 billion won for infrastructure, and 52 billion won for the training of future researchers.
This year, a greater amount of capital will be allotted to research that directly relates to government policies and food security. The main goals for this year also include securing core technologies for global issues such as communicable diseases in the likes of the avian flu or mad cow disease. Financial support for high-tech medical complexes will also be increased.
95.9 billion won will be invested in stem cell research, up 60.5 percent from last year, which will be used to reinforce the sector's infrastructure. Korea published 625 scholarly articles last year in scientific journals listed in the SCI (Science Citation Index), up 22 percent from the previous year. The number of patent registrations logged 203.
Of the 75.9 billion won set aside for brain sciences, 45.8 percent (or 34.8 billion won) will be used for neurological disorders while the remaining funds will be used for the study of neurobiology, neural information, brain engineering, and cognitive functions.
