연말연시의 연하장은 우리만의 특징은 아니다. 미국도 각 주 별로 내용과 형식은 다르지만 주지사가 주민들에게 보내는 공식적인 메시지가 있다. 그 중에서 몇 개를 엿보면 영어도 공부하고 표현법도 익히는 효과를 볼 수 있다.

먼저 'During this Christmas season' 'Happy Holidays from the Governor's House' 'During this holiday season'처럼 소개말을 넣는 경우도 있고 직설적으로 'Happy Holidays from our house to your house'처럼 쓰는 주지사도 있다. '부디 ~하세요'의 뜻으로 'May ~'가 많이 쓰인다.

가령 'May peace, love, joy and prosperity bless your home and family this holiday season' 'May the New Year bring you peace, happiness, and good health.'도 좋고 'Wishing you peace and health in the New Year' 'Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season With Peace.' 'Wishing you a Holiday Season filled with faith, family and friendship.' 'May the gracious presence of God fill your home with peace and your heart with joy, in this holy season and always.' 'May the spirit of this holiday season fill your heart with love, peace and serenity. Wishing you many blessings for the New Year.'도 좋다. 이들 연하장 문구는 공식처럼 정해진 것은 아니다. 'May love and peace fill your heart and home with the joys of faith and friendship.'처럼 '부디 ~는 ~처럼 되시길 빈다'는 어구가 가장 많다.

좀 더 다채로운 표현으로는 'From our family to yours, we send our warmest wishes for a happy Holiday Season, a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous and safe New Year.'도 있다. 가장 서술적이며 있는 그대로 표현한 이 문구는 '연말이어서 보내오니 부디 번창하시고 행복하세요'라고 해석될 수 있다. 자신의 이름과 가족을 넣어서 표현하는 주지사는 'May the joy and peace of this Holiday Season be yours, Merry Christmas from the Henry family.'라고 쓰기도 한다. 이런 저런 표현도 싫다면 간단하게 'Happy Holidays to you and yours!' 혹은 'Season's Greetings - Wishing you peace, health and happiness throughout the year.'이라고 보내는 주지사도 있다. 어떤 주지사는 여러 장의 카드에 'Sending Holiday Cheer' 'Happy New Year' 'Peace on Earth'라고 쓴다.
