대부분의 원자재 기사를 장식하는 것은 단연 금과 원유입니다. 하지만 헬륨 가격또한 급상승하고 있다는 것을 알고 계셨나요? 이런 현상은 파티풍선 외에 다양한 산업에 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 제인 웰스 기자가 로스앤젤레스에서 파티풍선 및 자세한 사항을 전합니다.

빌 헬륨은 나사부터 시작해서 파티 가게에서도 찾는 한정된 자원인데요. 이 열기는 요즘 찾아보기 힘들답니다.

"우리는 지난 15년동안 헬륨을 판매했지만 최근처럼 공급이 부족했던 적은 없었어요."

매트 홀은 LA에서 헬륨공급업체를 운영하고 있는데요. 미국은 총 헬륨 매장량의 70%를 갖고 있으며 가격이 올해 12%나 급등했습니다. 문제는 정유능력 문제와 새로운 공급원을 찾는데 드는 많은 비용이죠.

"대다수의 헬륨이 풍선사업에만 들어가는 것이 아니고 다른 산업에도 쓰입니다. 많은 산업기술과 정부등에서 사용하는데 안타깝게도 헬륨은 어디서든 무자기로 있는대로 쓰이고 있죠."

Elegant Balloons 등의 파티가게는 오르는 가격등에 대응해야하며 소비자들에게 앞으로 물품이 없을 수도 있다고 경고하고 있는데요.

"왜 이렇게 물량이 부족한지 모르겠지만 중국 플라즈마 텔레비전에 사용이 된대요."

정황은 이런데 헬륨 공급자인 Airgas는 민간부문에 헬륨을 공급하는 토지관리국이 가격을 올해 16%나 올렸다고 합니다. 향후 몇개월 동안 공급이 부족할 것이라고 합니다. 다른 관련주식은Air Product와 Praxair인데요. 지질 조사소에 의하면 미국이 7천3백만 달러의 A급 헬륨을 작년에 발췌했지만 계속되는 수요증가로 가격이 더 뛸 것이라고 합니다. 하지만 중요한 사실은 매시스는 추수감사절 퍼레이드 때까지 아무런 공급문제가 없을 것이고 축 늘어진 스누피를 보진 않을 것이라고 하네요. 하지만 앨버커키에서 있을 대형 열기구 축제때의 대회에서는 헬륨이 아닌 수소를 사용할 것이라 하네요. 여러분 오 맙소사이네요.

Bill, you know, helium is a limited resource used by everyone from Nasa to the party store, but right now hot air is hard to come by."We've been selling helium for about 15 years and I haven't seen the supply as tight as it is today."Matt Hall runs a helium supply in LA. The U.S. has 70% of the world's reservesand prices have ballooned 12% this year. The problem is hiccups in refining capacityand the high cost of finding new sources."The majority of helium isn't used in the balloon business, it's used in other areas. Different industry technology, government, et cetera, and unfortunately, you know, that helium will get used up wherever it can." Party stores like Elegant Balloons are getting popped with higher pricesand warning customers they may run short."I have no idea why it's short, but i heard they sell it to China for plasma tv or something."That's the story. Airgas is a distributor of helium and says the bureau of land management, which sells some helium crude to the private sector, raised prices 16% this year. quote, we expect supply to remain tight in the coming months. Other stocks include Air products and Praxair and USGS says the U.S. extracted 730 million dollars worth of grade A helium last year but in the face of rising demand quote the price of pure helium is expected to continue to increase. but the important stuff, Macy's tell us it's worked with its supplier and there will be no problems at the thanksgiving day parade, no droopy snoopy, but in Albuquerque the big balloon fiesta opens this weekend and reportedly at least half the balloons in America's challenge race there will use hydrogen instead. guys? oh, boy.
