China Unicom to Enter S. Korean Telecom Market

China Unicom, the second largest mobile carrier in China, will establish a branch in South Korea. It is the first time that a Chinese mobile carrier makes inroads into Korea.

According to the telecommunications industry, China Unicom will invite VIPs to a ceremony to announce its entry into Korea at a hotel in Seoul on Thursday. Chinese government officials including those in the Embassy of China in Korea will attend the event.

China Unicom's Korea branch plans to serve as a bridge between Korea and its headquarters. Its initial task is to understand communications-related rules and laws in Korea rather than getting on to business immediately.

"China Unicom is setting up a branch in a bid to assess the current situation in Korea, judging that the Korean telecom industry will continue growing further," an official from Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said.

The telecom industry forecasts that China Unicom will primarily provide mobile services for Chinese businesses and residents in Korea.

China Unicom is the country's second biggest mobile operator after China Mobile and the world's eighth largest with a total of 183.74 million subscribers as of late July.
