[해외논단]美 언론의 경박한 보도 태도

미국인들은 지난 몇 주 동안 자나깨나 안나 니콜 스미스의 죽음과 그녀의 딸 운명에 관한 뉴스를 들었다. 어디 그뿐이랴. 토크쇼 진행자 돈 아이머스의 망언 소동으로 나라 전체가 마비될 지경이다. 여기에 영화배우 알렉 볼드윈이 11세의 불쌍한 딸에게 "돼지"라고 고함을 지르며 가세했다.

언론 매체들이 이런 시시한 사건들을 보도하는 이유는 시청자들이 이런 뉴스를 본다는 것을 알기 때문이다. 미국인들이 이런 시시한 일시적 사건에 관심을 기울이는 이유는 무엇일까. 언론은 올 봄에 진정한 뉴스거리가 없는 듯한 태도를 보이고 있다.

이라크 전쟁이 막바지에 도달한 가운데 이라크 주둔 미군 최고사령과 데이비스 페트레우스 대장은 민주당이 전쟁 예산 지출을 중단시키기 전에 바그다드의 치안을 확보하고 이라크의 취약한 민주체제를 안정시키기 위해 병력을 증강하고 있다.

이라크의 알 카에다는 미국인들의 사기를 떨어뜨리기 위해 가급적 규모가 큰 공격을 많이 하기 위해 노력 중이다. 중동의 대다수 지역은 장래가 여전히 불안하다. 지난주 지하드 대원들이 사우디아라비아에서 유전을 폭파하는 계획을 추진하다 체포되었다. 영국 정보국에서 흘러나온 메모에 따르면 테러분자들이 몇 차례 대규모 공격을 계획하고 있다고 한다.

과거 미국의 우방이었던 유럽은 어떤가. 유로화의 강세로는 침체된 경제 성장과 높은 실업률, 동화되지 않는 소수민족들, 취약한 국방능력을 가릴 수가 없다. 유럽인들은 예측불가능한 러시아나 핵무장을 서두르는 이란 혹은 알 카에다의 차세대 대량살상계획을 막아낼 수 있는 정신적, 물질적 방어능력 양면에 자신이 없다.

러시아는 갑자기 믿기 어려울 만큼 부유해졌다. 러시아는 오래지 않아 하루 1000만배럴의 원유를 생산하게 된다. 생산된 원유의 대부분은 천정부지로 가격이 치솟는 국제시장에서 팔린다. 러시아는 이미 유럽의 천연가스 하루 수요량의 절반을 공급하고 있다.

러시아 정부는 에너지란 새로운 무기를 해외에서 휘두르는 한편 국내에서 억압정책을 강화하고 있다. 협박을 능사로 하는 블라디미르 푸틴 대통령은 천연가스 공급을 중단하겠다고 구 소련 공화국들을 협박하고 에스토니아를 외교적으로 고립시키겠다고 위협한다.

그는 나토(북대서양조약기구) 회원국들에게 미국이 주도하는 미사일 방어체제에 참여하지 말라고 경고한다. 러시아의 반체제인사들이 국내외에서 의문의 죽음을 당하고 있다.

더욱 위험한 이란은 핵무장 의도를 밝히고 이스라엘을 말살하겠다고 맹세한다. 이란은 또 헤즈볼라와 하마스의 테러분자들을 지원하고 영국 해군병사들을 납치하며 이라크 주둔 미군을 죽이기 위해 폭탄을 설치하는 데 여념이 없다.

한편 미국은 거대한 소비와 석유 수요를 충족하기 위해 빚을 계속 지고 있다. 일본과 중국이 보유한 달러화를 합치면 1조달러가 넘는다. 두 나라 가운데 하나는 미국에 대한 경제적 영향력을 행사하기 위한 외교정책을 반드시 세울 것이다.

세계 하루 석유소비량의 25%를 사용하는 미국인들은 석유 소비를 줄이기는커녕 국제 유가를 천문학적 수준으로 올리고 수십억 달러의 돈을 자국에 적대적이고 정치적으로 불안정한 중동 산유국들에 쏟아 부어 결국 테러분자들의 손에 돈이 들어가게 만든다.

만약 알 카에다가 미국 내에서 더러운 폭탄을 터뜨리거나 유전을 폭파한다면 어떻게 할 것인가. 또 이라크에서 미군이 철수하거나 러시아가 유럽에 천연가스 공급을 중단하고 구 소련 공화국들을 다시 합병한다면 어떻게 될 것인가. 미국인들이 외면하고 있는 이런 미래의 세계적 사건들이 수백만 명의 운명을 순식간에 바꿀 수 있다.

미국인들이 플레이보이 표지모델의 죽음이나 토크쇼 진행자의 망언, 영화배우의 폭언에 집착하는 이유는 무엇일까. 대답은 간단하다. 이런 인간들은 옛날 사람들이 고달픈 현실에서 도피하기 위해 변태적인 눈요깃거리로 즐긴 축제장의 괴물들의 현대판이다.

Hooked on trivia

Americans for weeks woke up and went to bed to news updates about Anna Nicole Smith''s death and the fate of her daughter.

Then, we seemed to go into near national paralysis over Don Imus'' "hos" slur -- yes, including this writer, who wrote half a column on his arrogance.

Then actor Alec Baldwin came to the rescue screaming, "Pig," at his poor, 11-year-old daughter -- and, of course, accepting Dr. Phil''s televised offer of intervention.

The media run with this trivia because they know it will hook viewers. But why do we care about this transient fluff? It''s not as if there were no real news this spring.

To recap just some of what''s been going on while we waste our time following spats between Rosie O''Donnell and Donald Trump:

We are reaching the 11th hour in Iraq, as Gen. David Petraeus surges troops to secure Baghdad and stabilize a fragile democracy before the Democrats cut off funds for the war effort. Al Qaeda in Iraq tries to pull off as many spectacular attacks as possible to demoralize Americans. The future of much of the Middle East hangs in the balance. Last week, jihadists who planned to blow up an oil field in Saudi Arabia were arrested. And according to a leaked memo from British intelligence, others plot new major attacks.

Our erstwhile ally Europe is experiencing the best and worst of times. A strong euro cannot hide static economic growth, high unemployment, unassimilated minorities and little defense capability. Europeans have little confidence in either their spiritual or material defenses to protect against an unpredictable Russia, a nuclear Iran or al Qaeda''s next-generation plans for mass destruction.

Speaking of Russia, it is suddenly rich beyond belief. It may soon pump 10 million barrels of oil per day -- much of it sold on the world market at sky-high prices. Russia already supplies half of Europe''s daily natural gas needs.

And as the Russian government becomes more repressive at home, it showcases its new energy clout abroad. A bullying President Vladimir Putin threatens former Soviet republics with gas cutoffs and Estonia with diplomatic isolation. He warns NATO countries not to participate in American-led missile defense. Russian dissidents mysteriously are murdered at home and abroad. Why reform its politics or the economy when Mother Russia can grow rich hawking oil?

Iran is even more dangerous, vowing both to become a nuclear power and wipe out Israel. Until then, it is busy supplying Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists, kidnapping sailors, and fabricating bombs to kill Americans in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the United States keeps borrowing to meet its enormous consumer and oil appetites. The Japanese and Chinese have, combined, stockpiled more than a trillion dollars from indebted Americans. One or both nations will inevitably adopt an assertive foreign policy to reflect their financial leverage over the U.S.

Despite politicians'' rhetoric about energy independence, Americans have made no progress in curbing our enormous oil appetite, 25 percent of the world''s daily use.

We incur debt to pay for imported petroleum, while ensuring astronomical world oil prices. That hurts poor nations and translates into billions of dollars pouring into the most unstable and hostile governments of the Middle East -- and eventually to terrorists themselves.

There are more than 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. Thousands took to the streets on May Day to demand new rights. While we squabble over border defense, increased security, guest workers, verifiable IDs, amnesty and earned citizenship, hundreds of thousands more aliens enter the U.S. illegally every year.

The public and its leaders know these problems cannot continue unaddressed -- and yet we fear the bitter medicine to come far more than suffering with the present chronic illness.

But what if al Qaeda lets off a dirty bomb or blows up an oil field, or if Americans flee Iraq, or if Russia decides to cut off natural gas to Europe or reabsorbs one of its bothersome former republics? We try to hear and see no evil, but it''s not far-fetched to suggest future world events could quickly change the lives of millions.

So why then fixate on Anna Nicole, Rosie, Don Imus and Alec Baldwin?

Simple. They are the modern equivalents of grotesque carnival freak shows that once provided a perverse sense of escapism from what people dare not face. Yet as our dependency on such distraction grows, so, too, do the real dangers we ignore.

The ghost of Anna Nicole, foul-mouthed Rosie and trash-talking Don Imus turn out to be the best friends Ayman al-Zawahri, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mr. Putin have.
